Several popular frozen treats have been recalled from Hudson Valley supermarkets following reports that the product may be contaminated.

The Food and Drug Administration announced the voluntary recall of Fieldbrook Foods Corporation orange cream bars and chocolate coated vanilla ice cream bars that were produced in 2017 in its New York plant.

According to the FDA, both products are being recalled due to the possibility that they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

“Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”

The recalled products have a production date between Jan. 1, 2017 and Dec. 31, 2017, with a “best by” date between Jan. 1 through Dec. 31 this year. No illnesses have yet to be reported. The recall was voluntary.

Officials said that the potential for contamination was discovered during routine industry testing, which revealed the presence of the contaminant. There is no evidence of contamination prior to Oct. 31, 2017, though the company expanded the recall as a precaution. Production of the product has been suspended.

In a statement, company officials said that “Fieldbrook Foods Corporation takes the safety and integrity of our products very seriously. Our families also consume these products and we are working tirelessly to identify the cause of the problem and permanently fix it so the orange cream and other types of ice cream bars made at Fieldbrook Foods will again have the complete confidence of our customers and consumers.”
