Kaftan runs N-Hance in Wappinger, a franchise, which offers a unique way to refinish cabinets by using wood that's cleaner and simpler and done without sanding.

"It's all about making everything more convenient and using more non-toxic products," Kaftan, a Poughkeepsie resident, said.

Before he started his own franchise, Kaftan would consistently meet with people who were considering a refacing, only to get sticker shock when they got the bill.

"They thought it might cost $5,000, but it would cost between $10-15,000," Kaftan said. "You might as well just get a new cabinet. N-Hance was something the market was looking for.'

Kaftan admits the contracting industry doesn't have the best reputation, but he said he strives to always be straightforward and honest with his customers.

"Everyone has been misled or ripped off by a contractor sometime in their life," Kaftan said. "It's a sad thing. When the contractor doesn't meet the customer's expectations, it's usually because there wasn't enough communication. We try to overcommunicate. We want to underpromise and overdeliver. We're not going to promise to remove your stain if we don't know that we can."

Kaftan said he used to be more hands on and he still tries to get on a couple of jobs, though he is recovering from a broken leg he got while skiing.

"I'm itching to get back out there," Kaftan said. "We have outstanding technicians."

Getting to show a customer their new kitchen is one of the fun perks of the job, Kaftan said.

"It's great to hear how happy they are," Kaftan said. "It makes you feel proud since you're saving them some money and keeping them from bad contractors."
