Young Writers Spotlighted At Millbrook Literary Festival

MILLBROOK, N.Y. -- Children of all ages will have opportunities to take part in the Millbrook Literary Festival set for May 21 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Millbrook Library.

The Young Writers Showcase gives students between the ages of eight and 18 the opportunity to enter any written works that they have produced during the current school year. In addition, three informative sessions are set with authors. Students entering the Showcase can read from their work during presentations from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and all works will be printed in the Young Writers Showcase Booklet. 

One entry per student will be allowed in the following categories: ages eight to 11, 12-14 and 15-18. Two prizes will be awarded per category. Each entry must have a title and be limited to 500 words or less. It must include student’s name, age, grade, school and telephone number. Students may write on a subject of their choice. All entries must be typed and submitted electronically to Orchmail@aol.com and the deadline for entries is Monday, May 9. 

The sessions with authors include: 

  • How Cool Is That?! Owl Pellet Dissection Workshop, 10 to 10:45 a.m. Children are invited to join teacher and author Velya Jancz-Urban as she shares her most popular hands- on science class for kids. 
  • Spring Into Science and Nature, 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. Acclaimed children’s authors Jordan D. Brown, Nancy Castaldo, and Nancy Furstinger will spark an interest in your children in the plants and animals of the Hudson Valley.
  • The Art Of the Picture Book, 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. Join masters of the craft Hans Wilhelm, Steve Metzger, and Hudson Valley authors Karen Orloff and Lesa Cline-Ransome in a lively discussion of the importance of picture books in developing higher level reading and thinking skills.
  • Teen Writing Workshop, 3 to 3:35 p.m. With young adult author Julie Chibbaro, teens will learn the basics of storytelling. Workshop includes craft lessons on setting your scene, how to build a character and a plot, and how to revise your story.
