HYDE PARK, N.Y. -- There are times – especially in winter – when you crave the comforting environment of a steakhouse and all its pampering glory. Add some red wine, a side of potatoes and you’re in meat mecca heaven.

What Makes It A Cut Above: Joseph’s, which re-branded itself as a pricey steakhouse about six years ago, remains true to its beginnings as a humble Italian eatery. Black and white photos of Frank Sinatra during his Rat Pack days line the walls of its main dining room and the menu still includes traditional eats such as stuffed clams, fried calamari and eggplant parmigiana.

But, as the friendly and attentive owner Joseph Wilson likes to point out, the restaurant’s history goes way back to the 1930's when Eleanor Roosevelt used it as a tearoom where she entertained European royalty, including Britain’s Queen Elizabeth. (It is located near Val-Kill, the first lady’s get-away cottage, and just minutes away from Franklin D. Roosevelt’s home). Wilson has carried on the entertainment tradition with live theater, concerts and other events.

Joseph’s signature dry-aged in-house steaks range in price from $78 for a 34-ounce Porterhouse for two to $35 for a 20-ounce T-bone. On the regular menu, certified Black Angus steaks go for $29 for a 12-ounce New York strip and $42 for a 12-ounce filet mignon. Citizen reviewers claim that the prime rib melts in your mouth.
