Nineteen years and one day after the fatal shooting at Columbine High School, more than a dozen students and community members rallied at the courthouse to “prove that students will not lose interest, we will not give up, and we will fight (until) change happens,” according to student organizers.

The student coalition in Carmel organized the rally, with an eye “towards a safer America through gun reform control.” The rally featured speakers that included seven current students at Carmel High School and SUNY Oneonta, as well as alumni.

“(The speakers) spoke passionately about what it’s like to watch a nation fail us, and what it means to rise above,” organizer Anne Pozner said. “Today was a call to action. Today indicates we will never give up.”

Since Feb. 14, a light has been shed that adults have failed us, and as ‘children,’ we have made it our duty to find a solution,” the students said. “We shouldn't be attending school, church or concerts in fear of getting shot.”

“We rally because change does not come with silence,” the student organizers wrote in an email. “Change knocks down doors with the power of dissent. We invite you to come watch America change. We call for policy change, and if policies don't change, we will vote them out."
