Kayla Barone, who plays the piano and, more recently, the guitar, considers herself a modernized version of Amy Winehouse with a Lady Gaga/Lana Del Rey flair, has raised $280 but is hoping for $500. "No contribution is too small," she said.
The Arlington High School graduate, who is known locally for her bold look -- think sequin and glitter outfits and neon colored lipstick -- is all about creating original songs, many of which come from the heart.
"My hometown is such a pretty, and peaceful place," said Barone. "Although I'm a city girl at heart, I must admit that inspiration can be found everywhere in such a scenic area. I love to go on my porch swing and write songs as the sun sets."
She also looks to other singer-songwriters like Charli XCX, Miley Cyrus, and Melanie Martinez for inspiration. "
"A lot of my songs are upbeat and edgy, and I believe that as a songwriter and storyteller, that I need to dress as the character would in my songs," she said.
Barone has been chasing her dreams of becoming a successful artist since she was four-years-old and now believes, thanks to her hard work, unique sound, and quirky lyrics, that she's capable of reaching her goals.
She has deferred college for a year (SUNY Purchase) to continue singing, writing and performing.
