Golden Corral Closure Tops Dutchess News For 2017

DUTCHESS COUNTY, N.Y. -- Golden Corral did not have a good 2017 in Poughkeepsie.

The long-delayed buffet finally opened on Route 9 in the Town of Poughkeepsie Jan. 15 after having issues with the gas line. Just as quickly as it opened, it closed briefly in February for undisclosed reasons.

It mercifully closed for good in March, though in October, reports the restaurant might be reopening again.

The heroin epidemic continued to hit Dutchess County hard. In July, two Dutchess County women were arrested by state police after allegedly nearly overdosing on heroin in their car with a 1-year-old in the backseat.

Tamara Ward, a Poughkeepsie resident, was arrested and charged with a felony count of aggravated driving while intoxicated under Leandra’s Law, criminal possession of a controlled substance and endangering the welfare of a child, both misdemeanors. Jennifer Lasko, a Pleasant Valley resident, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

In February, six correction officers at Green Haven Correctional Facility were injured Tuesday while escorting three inmates for medication, according to prison officials.

One of the suspected attackers was armed with a 6 ½-inch plexiglass shank, which he hid in his underwear, according to prison officials, who said that two of the officers had to be transported to the hospital for treatment and did not immediately return to duty.

In September, it was announced National Resources has acquired the former IBM East Campus in Fishkill. NRE is taking ownership of 300 acres of land with 2 million square feet of buildings from GlobalFoundries with plans to turn it into a mixed-use development with retail, hotel, and residential components. 

A Marist sorority received the surprise of a lifetime in March when they were surprised on TV by Ellen DeGeneres who invited them to attend a taping of her show in Los Angeles. In a letter to the show,  the sorority said it sorority schedules their classes so they don't miss an episode and discuss the show in a group chat.

The sorority sisters thought they would be Skyping with a producer, but instead, saw DeGeneres. Screaming, crying and jumping ensued.
