Poughkeepsie, Pawling Get Millions In State Water-Quality Funds

DUTCHESS COUNTY, N.Y. -- Two Dutchess County municipalities will be receiving several million dollars under a grant program designed to support water infrastructure improvement projects across the state.

The village of Pawling will receive more than $1.7 million to improve its drinking and waste water systems, according to a statement from the office of Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The amount represents more than half of the project's estimated $2.85 million price tag.

Further north and west, the city of Poughkeepsie has been awarded a $2 million grant to improve the water infrastructure there, according to the governor's statement. Though the figure is higher than that of Pawling's grant, it represents a far smaller portion of the total cost, which is estimated to be about $11.7 million.

"New York invests more to protect water-quality and strengthen water infrastructure than any state in the nation," Cuomo said. "These grants will make it easier for localities to make the critical upgrades that ensure their water systems continue to provide New Yorkers with safe, high-quality water."

The grants are two of 45 disbursed throughout the state. In total, more than $75 million in grants were awarded for the sake of water infrastructure improvements this year. The grants are part of a larger initiative, the New York State Water Infrastructure Improvement Act of 2015, which provides $200 million in grants over a three-year period.
