Agnes Walsh Marona, Millbrook Resident

MILLBROOK, N.Y. – Agnes Walsh Marona, of Millbrook, died Sunday, June 19, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center.

She was born in Yonkers, to Estelle Piekarski and Francis Walsh, and lived most of her life in New York, except for when she studied at Rosary College in Illinois. 

She graduated from Maria Regina High School and the College of Saint Rose in Albany and received her master’s degree from St. John’s University in Queens, N.Y. 

She was a Sister of the Resurrection in the New York Province for 22 years. When she completed her master’s degree, she moved from the classroom to the library and continued teaching at Maria High School in Hartsdale, Averill Park High School and Bennett College in Millbrook. She was a librarian at the Legislative Reference Library in Albany. 

After leaving the religious order, she met and married John Marona, and Millbrook and Marona’s Market became her new world. She and her husband were married for 38 years.

She was the sister of Ronald Walsh of Sag Harbor, Patricia Walsh of Sand Lake, Dianne (Michael) Walshhampton of Rensselaer, and Kathleen (Howard) Weinberg of Virginia Beach.

In addition to her husband, John Marona of Millbrook, she was predeceased by her sisters, Alexandria (George) Peet Dolores (Ralph) Merone, Joane Walsh Edwina (Ken Gatton) Walsh and her brother Paul Walsh.

There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 a.m. from St. Joseph’s Church, North Ave., Millbrook. Interment will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Millbrook.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in her memory be made to St. Joseph’s Church, P.O. Box 439, Millbrook, NY 12545.

Arrangements were handled by Allen Funeral Home, 3270 Franklin Ave., Millbrook.
