Mary 'Joy' Bauer, 91, Longtime Poughkeepsie Resident

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Longtime Poughkeepsie resident Mary "Joy" Bauer died Friday, April 1. She was 91.

A resident of The Fountains at Millbrook Retirement Community since 1986, Bauer taught woodcarving to the residents and was involved in many of the community's activities. 

Bauer was a Rochester native and graduated from Cortland State Teachers College in 1947 with a B.S. in physical education and also pursued graduate work at Syracuse University and the State College at Albany. 

Bauer taught physical education in the Hyde Park Central School District from 1955 until her retirement in 1979. 

She previously taught in Hillsdale and Weedsport.

She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, an international honorary teacher's society and served as a past president of the local chapter. 

Bauer also was a member of the National Retired Teachers Association, the Dutchess County Retired Teachers Association, and in 2006 she received the Dutchess County Volunteer award from The Office of the Aging. 

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at noon Friday, May 20 at St. Joseph-Immaculate Conception Church, 15 North Ave. Millbrook with the Rev. Msgr. Gerardo J. Colacicco officiating. 

A reception will follow immediately at The Fountains in Millbrook. 

Burial will be at the convenience of the family at Old St. Bridget's Cemetery in Copake Falls.
