Erin Meagher, 27, of Brewster, was charged in March with grand larceny for using chamber funds to purchase expensive clothes, shoes, and handbags. She pleaded guilty Tuesday to a reduced misdemeanor charge of petty larceny.
Hours after the admission of guilt, village officials said she should immediately resign, according to Peter Brewster Hansen, village clerk, and treasurer.
"Based upon her admission of guilt in the Carmel Town Court to the misdemeanor of petit larceny in relation to abusing her position as CEO of the Chamber of Commerce, and thereby breaching the trust and confidence to which the public is entitled with respect to its elected officials, we ask for the immediate resignation of Erin Meagher from her position of Village Trustee," the Village Board of Trustee said in a statement.
Meagher was sentenced to 100 hours of community service and ordered to pay back $2,809.98 in restitution, said Larry Glasser, an assistant district attorney in Putnam County.
Joseph Tock, chamber counsel, said the theft was a real blow to the all-volunteer organization that presents numerous town events.
"Her admission of misdemeanor stealing validates and confirms what was found by the chamber's board," he added. "We applaud Assistant District Attorney Larry Glasser for settling this matter so swiftly."
