Dover Man Charged With Stealing Rifle From Wappinger

WAPPINGER, N.Y. -- A Dover man has been charged in the theft of a firearm, according to the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office.

Police arrested Scott Sweeney, 39, on a grand larceny in connection with a stolen rifle from the Town of Wappinger, they say.

The theft was reported to the Sheriff’s Office in late October, according to police.

An investigation revealed Sweeney as a potential suspect, and he is accused of stealing the rifle and then selling it to another person, police said.

Sweeney was arrested on Saturday, and the rifle has been recovered by detectives, according to police.

Sweeney has been charged with one count of fourth-degree grand larceny, felony, police said.

He was reportedly arraigned in Wappinger Town Court and is being held in Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond, according to police.
