Matthew Wells was crossing at the intersection of Noxon Road and Route 55 around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, when he was hit, the sheriff’s office said.

Upon a deputy's arrival, she observed a car stopped in the roadway with an unconscious man lying on the ground. The deputy and a state trooper then began administering first aid until the arrival of the LaGrange Fire Department and EMS, the sheriff's office said.

The male, later identified as  Wells, was transported to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital for serious head injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

The driver, 27-year-old Jessica Orrego, also of Poughkeepsie, was turning left onto Route 55 from Noxon Road when she hit Wells, the sheriff’s office said.

The accident is under investigation, but it appears to be due to Wells’ “failure to yield,” the sheriff’s office said.

No charges had been bought against Orrego as of Wednesday, Feb. 17, authorities said.

Sheriff’s deputies were assisted at the scene by state police and local firefighters.
