A man cutting down a tree in Dutchess County was killed Tuesday when the tree fell on top of him around 11:30 a.m. on Mallory Road in Union Vale, according to New York State Police.

The unidentified man, a 38-year-old Union Vale resident, was pinned beneath the tree before first responders arrived and administered CPR.

He subsequently lost consciousness and troopers, assisted by EMStar EMS, commenced life-saving measures.

He was taken to MidHudson Regional Hospital with life-threatening injuries, said Trooper Melissa McMorris.

"Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries," McMorris said.

State police were assisted on scene by the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office, Union Vale EMS, and EMStar Ambulance.

The incident remains under investigation and appears to be accidental in nature.
