North East Woman, 40, Faces Grand Larceny, Welfare Fraud Charges

NORTH EAST, N.Y. -- A North East woman was arrested Friday, Dec. 11, and charged with theft in a welfare fraud case, the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office said.

Charlotte Motts, 40, is accused of stealing $9,465 in food stamps between 2013 and 2014, police said.

According to police, Motts had concealed other sources of household income when she collected benefits from the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program.

She now faces charges of third-degree grand larceny and third-degree welfare fraud, both Class D felonies, police said.

Motts was arraigned in the Poughkeepsie City Court and released on her own recognizance.

She is to reappear in court at a later date.
