According to City of Beacon Fire Chief Gary VanVoorhis, the fire department received a 911 call regarding a house fire around 4:45 a.m. at 98 Rombout Ave., with occupants trapped inside.

Firefighters arrived on scene within two minutes and found a two-and-half-story wood frame home with heavy fire showing out the front door and on the second floor, VanVoorhis said.

The occupants all exited the house from the second floor. Three ran down the interior stairs through the fire, receiving severe burns. The fourth resident jumped from a second-floor rear bedroom window, he said.

All were initially transported to St. Luke's Emergency Room, but the three severely burned were later transferred to the Westchester Hospital, he added.

City of Beacon firefighters attacked the fire by running hoses through the front door and to the second floor. Additional hose lines were run to the attic, VanVoorhis said.

"All fire company crews made an aggressive attack to bring the fire under control, but the home sustained fire damage to the entire house," he said.

One dog was saved by firefighters and one dog perished on the second floor.

The Village of Fishkill and Rombout crews assisted with extinguishment and overhaul. Fire crews were hampered by a live power line in the front yard. Also hampering firefighters was a broken hose line and icy ground surfaces.

Central Hudson Gas and Electric were at the scene to disconnect the services. County Car 17, the Dutchess County Fire Investigation Team, Beacon PD, and the Beacon Building Department were on the scene. The City of Beacon Department of Public Works also assisted to salt the road surface. BVAC and Mobile Life Services transported the four fire victims.

One firefighter slipped on the ice and was injured, but remained on duty. The department was on scene for 11 hours.

The department was also assisted by Village of Fishkill, Castle Point fire departments, as well as Rombout, Glenham, and Hughsonville.

The cause of the fire is under investigation
