The New York State Police performed checks on several retailers over the weekend to ensure that they are compliant with the state’s Alcoholic Beverage Control Law and crackdown initiative on underage drinking.
During the operation, which was conducted on Friday and Saturday, state police conducted checks on 22 retail locations in Dutchess County, which led to the arrest of two men for violating the law and selling to minors.
Retailers and gas stations in Wappingers Falls, Poughkeepsie, Beacon and Fishkill all were found to be in compliance.
Troopers arrested 33-year-old Red Hook resident Heidar Hasan-Nasereddin, who works at the Shell station on Route 9 in Fishkill and Poughkeepsie resident Shakeel Mohammed, 37, an employee at Conoco on Fishkill Avenue in Beacon during the operation for selling to minors. Each was charged with misdemeanor counts of prohibited sales of an alcoholic beverage and unlawfully dealing with a child.
Both men were issued appearance tickets and are due back in court later this year to answer the charges.
According to the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services, underage drinking is associated with the three most common causes of death among youth who consume alcohol, including accidental deaths - such as car accidents - homicides, and suicides.
State Police said it plans to continue to conduct underage drinker enforcement details statewide “in order to protect the citizens of New York and its youth.”
