Cuomo Donor Apologizes For Racial Remark About Sen. Stewart-Cousins

Senate Minority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins of Westchester is condemning a comment made by a prominent financial backer of Gov. Andrew Cuomo that she says was racially charged.

“Hypocrites like Stewart-Cousins who pay fealty to powerful union thugs and bosses do more damage to people of color than anyone who has ever donned a hood," Daniel Loeb, a billionaire hedge fund manager wrote on Facebook.

Loeb's comments were in response to a meeting Stewart-Cousins had with Cuomo where the senator told Cuomo he only sees her as a black woman and not as a suburban legislator, according to the New York Times.

Stewart-Cousins is the first woman to lead a legislative conference in Albany.

Loeb later apologized and took down the post. Loeb is a supporter of the Independent Democratic Conference, a  breakaway group of Democratic senators, that have blocked Stewart-Cousins and the Democrats from having the majority in Albany.

“In 2017 it is outrageous and offensive that this type of language is used by someone with such wide political influence," Mike Murphy, a spokesman for Stewart Cousins said. "There is no place in our discourse, political or otherwise, for these dangerous words. Daniel Loeb should be utterly ashamed of his disgusting statements. This whole episode speaks volumes about the state of our politics right here in New York.”

Loeb's comments were also condemned by a spokesman for Cuomo and by Sen. Jeff Klein, the leader of the IDC.

Stewart-Cousins' senate district includes Greenburgh, part of White Plains, part of New Rochelle, part of Yonkers and Scarsdale.
