NORTH EAST, N.Y. -- At least one Republican was elected to the North East Town Council Tuesday. One seat is still open, according to a story in the Poughkeepsie Journal.

Four candidates vied for two seats on the town board: Democrat John Midwood, Republican Charles Barrett, Democrat Ralph Fedele and Republican John Merwin, 63, according to a story in the Poughkeepsie Journal.

Midwood took the most votes with 333; Merwin had 281. Fedele had 256 and Barrett had 197 votes. So far, Midwood is the only clear winner, but that could change once the 62 absentee ballots are all accounted for, the Poughkeepsie Journal said.

The four-year positions pay $4,900 a year, the Poughkeepsie Journal said.
