Teachout, a Dover Plains resident, sought the Democratic nomination for governor in 2014, but lost to incumbent Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

She is seeking to represent the 19th congressional district, which consists of all of Ulster, Sullivan, Columbia, Schoharie, Otsego, Delaware and Greene counties and parts of Montgomery, Dutchess, Rensselaer and Broome counties.

Teachout told voters, in her first public appearance since tossing her hat in the ring, that she will be a voice in Washington for teachers, small business owners, and other ordinary citizens, Time Warner Cable News reported.

Teachout is known for tackling issues involving education and the environment.
