Teachout Seen As Carrying Bernie Sanders' Baton In Congressional Race

With more than $1.6 million in her war chest and 60,000 Facebook followers, Zephyr Teachout of the 19th District in Dutchess County is battling to carry on Bernie Sanders message in one of the most talked about Congressional races in the country, according to the Huffington Post.

Teachout, considered a major torchbearers for many of Sanders' causes including campaign finance reform and global warming, is facing off with former state assemblyman John Faso, backed by two billionaire Republican donors Paul Singer and Robert Mercer, who have each showered the candidate's Super PAC with half a million dollars, said the Huffington Post.

As a populist insurgent carrying on the Sanders message, Teachout has exactly what Democrat's are looking in a candidate, including charisma, plenty of money and political knowledge, added the Huffington Post.

Teachout's book "Corruption In America: From Benjamin Franklin’s Snuff Box To Citizens United," mirrors her economic platform which bashes the North American Free Trade Agreement and puts out a call to bust up cable monopolies, as well as making big banks lend money to small businesses, reported the Huffington Post.

And, she has a giant weapon in her arsenal, Bernie Sanders himself. Last week, Sanders appeared at a Teachout rally in her district and called for the chant to change from "'That's 'Bernie!' has got to be transferred to Zephyr" he said.

Teachout’s campaign is serving as a test of the progressive movement and to date, it seems to be working with a recent survey conducted by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee giving her 5-point lead among voters, added the Huffington Post.

In the end, the outcome of the race will depend on whether she can withstand the avalanche of Super PAC ads against her in the weeks leading up to the election, reported the Huffington Post.
