Twenty-eight stores across spread across Brewster, Carmel and Patterson were checked on Friday using a minor to attempt to purchase alcohol along with plainclothes investigators and backed-up by uniformed troopers, said Trooper AJ Smith.

Twenty-seven store clerks refused to complete the sale of alcohol to the minor, he said.

Two clerks, both working at the Brewster Superette, at 2586 Carmel Ave., sold alcohol to the minor and were arrested, Hicks added.

Maria L. Lopes, 65, and Igor Lacerda, 21, were arrested and charged with prohibited sale of an alcoholic beverage and released on appearance tickets. In addition, their employers face possible civil penalties imposed by the State Liquor Authority, Hicks said.
