POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Our Lady of Lourdes had not surrendered more than 27 points in any football game this year. Until Saturday, when South Park quarterback Tyree Brown scorched the Warriors for numerous big plays as he led his team to a 49-46 victory in the Public High School Athletic Association Class A championship game.
It was Lourdes' first appearance in a state football title game.
The loss for Lourdes (10-3) overshadowed an amazing game by quarterback Dean Rotger and receiver Luke Timm. Rotger completed 25 passes and threw for 408 yards while Timm caught 18 passes for 277 yards and three touchdowns. Rotger also rushed for 51 yards and two touchdowns.
Brown, however, gave Lourdes fits running and passing. He rushed for 217 yards and added 140 more passing. He scored on runs of 63, 27, 38 and 44 yards, and threw touchdown passes covering 40 and 57 yards. He also had 11 tackles on defense.
Lourdes led 6-0 after a 4-yard touchdown run by Joe Scaglione in the first quarter. South Park (12-1) stormed back and took a 29-12 lead at halftime.
Lourdes trailed 43-40 early in the fourth quarter when Brown broke loose for a 44-yard touchdown scamper. Rotger’s 7-yard scoring pass to Timm with three minutes to go trimmed the lead to three.
South Park recovered the onside kick, and ran out the clock.
Rotger finished the year with 3,009 passing yards and 22 touchdown passes. He ends his career as the Section 1 leader for single season passing yards and career passing yards. Timm caught 96 passes on the season, 10 of them for touchdowns.The 18 receptions ties a state record.
Coach Brian Walsh, who took over in 2010, has never had a losing season at Lourdes and has guided the team to an 18-5 mark over the past two seasons.
