WATERBURY, Conn. — Westbound I-84 is closed in Waterbury at midday Monday due to a serious crash involving a tractor-trailer and a car, state police said.
There are life-threatening injuries in the crash between Exits 19 and 20, state police said.
The crash occurred at about 10:15 a.m., and the highway was still closed two hours later. Traffic backups stretch for nearly 5 miles to Exit 25A, the state Department of Transportation said.
Traffic is being diverted off I-84 at Exit 19, DOT said.
Traffic jams were also reported on the streets through downtown Waterbury, with traffic being diverted to Route 8 and I-84, DOT said.
There is also a 50- to 60-galloon fuel spill on the highway, state police said.
