The program is entering its 43rd season at Trinity Pawling School and is offering four more concerts through April 21 in a variety of genres. The first show featured the Pasadena Roof Orchestra on Oct. 21.

"It (the concert series) was started by a group of parents who wanted more culture injected into the life of the school and had musicians come on campus once or twice a year," said art teacher Ned Reade, who has been in charge of the series for 41 years. "Over time it grew but it was a hard sell for students. When you get 200 students who don’t want to hear a string quartet, it’s not pleasant for the musicians either. But we found there was great interest from the adults in community."

Students do attend the shows, Reade said, but it's not a requirement, like the original intent.

"The community really supports this to a great degree. We have over 120 subscribers. People know us in the area and know we bring good things to Pawling," Reade said. "Trinity Pawling has best facilities in this area to present music. We're the third best thing to do in Pawling after the Appalachian Trail and McKinney and Doyle's Cafe."

Musicians are selected for the series based on recommendations from a variety of places. "There are so many wonderful groups out there and you have to have your ear to the ground. Members of our committee go to New York City and hear showcases and see agents who are showing new work. We have a lot of contacts with agents who know us and and our audience."

The school campus has three concert venues: the Gardiner Theater, which holds 300-350 people; the McGraw Pavilion, currently under renovation, but used for coffee-house style gatherings with food; and the All Saints Chapel, which Reade said offers a gothic sound for smaller groups.

Upcoming shows are being held at the Gardiner Theater and include,

  • A Far Cry, Friday, Nov. 18 at 8 p.m. at the Gardiner Theater. This 18-member string orchestra based in Boston is the chamber Orchestra in Residence at Boston's Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Self-conducted except for the cellists, the orchestra performs standing. Their repertoire ranges from Bach, Mozart, Elgar, and Tchaikovsky to Bartok, Piazolla, and Arvo Pärt.
  • Sybarite5, Friday, Dec. 16 at 8 p.m. at the Gardiner Theater. A string quintet that breaks the rules of chamber music, they've played Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall, the Library of Congress, Wolf Trap, Caramoor, for his Holiness the Dalai Lama and on the CBS Early Show.
  • Cristina Pato Quartet, Friday, March 31 at 8 p.m. at the Gardiner Theater. A fusion of Sephardic, Latin, jazz, pop and contemporary influences, the band is devoted to Galician popular music. Pato, a bagpiper and pianist, is a member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble.
  • Slocan Ramblers, Friday, April 21 at 8 p.m. at the Gardiner Theater. An award-winning Canadian quartet rooted in traditional bluegrass.

Single tickets are $30; students are $15. No charge for children under 12. A mini-subscription to three shows is $75. Tickets can be ordered online
