Two officers sustained concussions and one officer was taken to the hospital, the NYCOPBA said.

The inmate, who is serving a 10-year sentence, and whose name is not being released, was being examined in the infirmary, the NYCOPBA said. He started following the nurses out the exit and one of the officers told him to stop. The inmate refused and struck the officer twice in the face when he approached him, the NYCOPBA said.

A second officer grabbed the inmate and pushed him up against the wall. The inmate was able to break free from the officer and punched him in the face, causing the officer to fall to the floor, knocking him unconscious, the NYCOPBA said.

A third officer responded to the scene and was punched in the head and body by the inmate, the NYCOPBA said. The two officers grabbed him as he continued to kick and punch and were able to force the inmate to the floor, the NYCOPBA said.

A fourth officer entered the room and witnessed the two officers still struggling with the inmate. He applied pepper spray to the inmate to get him to comply without any effect, the NYCOPBA said. The officers were finally able to get the inmate’s hands behind his back and into restraints, the NYCOPBA said.

The officer knocked unconscious sustained a bloody nose, concussion, and numbness to his extremities. He was hospitalized overnight for observation, the NYCOPBA said.

A second officer was transported by ambulance to Vassar Hospital. He was treated for a concussion, facial, neck, and arm contusions. He was treated and released from the hospital, the NYCOPBA said.

A third officer was also brought to Vassar by ambulance and treated for a cervical strain and a contusion to his left rib. He was treated and released, the NYCOPBA said. All three officers have not returned to duty, the NYCOPBA said.

A fourth officer sustained minor injuries in the attack but remained on duty, the NYCOPBA said. The inmate was transferred to Sullivan Correctional Facility following the incident, the NYCOPBA said.

That same morning, the inmate struck a female officer with an unopened tin can, the NYCOPBA said. The day before, he attempted to attack three officers with a makeshift wooden shank, the NYCOPBA said.
