Why terror threats matter

EDITORIAL: As an adjunct at Lehman College in the Bronx, I sometimes spot students drifting. I may stop talking mid-sentence, or stand and stare. Or I’ll suddenly raise my voice, even shout, to startle them, to bring focus back. Which is why I say: If an abject lesson presents itself, use it — especially this weekend.

You don’t know why we needed to hear about a “credible but uncorroborated” threat?

Because we did.

Think for a moment what has dominated your thoughts — work, school, family, as well they should, but also other concerns, issues, ideas, worries, preoccupations.

This is not to say that any of these are not in the least bit valid. It’s just a reminder, a heads up.

It’s a “look both ways before you cross the street.” Or a “don’t text while you’re driving.”

Can’t hurt.

Add to it the fact that this isn’t your run-of-the-mill fire drill.

Reliable sources have told reputable media sites that U.S. intelligence picked up more than idle chatter from Pakistan’s tribal regions, where al Qaeda and its current leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri, still hold great influence.

As a result, federal authorities are looking for several men, one who might be a U.S. citizen, believed dispatched on a suicide mission involving explosives in vehicles aimed for bridges or tunnels in New York City and Washington, D.C.

President Obama was first briefed on the threat Thursday morning, and members of Congress were briefed during the day, White House officials said.

Let us consider ourselves briefed, as well.

Let us all emerge from our self-obsessions this weekend as we honor the memories of all who died that day and silently pray that those left behind can continue to find reason to welcome each sunrise with hope.

I am your keeper, as you are mine. So let us all keep our eyes and ears open and look out for one another, as we do ourselves — the way those who rushed into those towers looked out for people they didn’t know.

Like them, let us all be prepared. Like them, let us do what needs be done.

New York City gearing up amid 9/11 terror threat

Friday, 09 September 2011 02:07 Jerry DeMarco

NYC TERROR THREAT: An unprecedented multi-agency drill is being conducted Friday morning at Grand Central and Penn stations and in Times Square in advance of the weekend’s 9/11 commemoration — amid a “credible but not corroborated” threat that radicals plan to drive bombs into New York City locations.

The squad will include officers from the NYPD, Metropolitan Transit Authority, Amtrack, NJ Transit, Port Authority and National Guard, city Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said tonight.

This would indicate the likelihood of a rail threat, but authorities by necessity didn’t go into detail.
