MILLBROOK, N.Y. – Millbrook Mayor Laura Hurley is apparently being investigated in connection with an alleged theft from the town of Washington’s coffers, according to the Poughkeepsie Journal.
Though no charges have been filed, Washington Town Supervisor Gary Ciferri said that he filed a larceny complaint with authorities in January and confirmed that Hurley was the likely focus of the police investigation, according to the Journal.
Hurley’s lawyer said his client – who once was employed as a bookkeeper for the town supervisor – had accidentally used a town credit card for a personal bill, according to the Journal, which reported that Hurley’s attorney claims that act amounted to a bookkeeping error, but not theft.
Millbrook officials said all village leaders have been made aware of Hurley’s situation but are awaiting the outcome of the police investigation before considering any potential action against the mayor, according to the Journal.
