Wires Hit Gas Line in Trumbull TRUMBULL, Conn. -- Nichols Fire Department in Trumbull was called to a report of wires down and Engine 301, Truck 304 and Rescue 300 responded just after 9 p.m. Wednesday. Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed a primary electrical wire down on the road. The arcing wire soon after came in contact with the lawn of 465 Shelton Road and traveled to the homes on the natural gas line.  After several short bursts, the gas line ruptured, creating a fire from the ground. Bridge Replacement Project On Route 53 In Redding Nears Completion REDDING, Conn. -- The bridge replacement project that caused a detour for nearly the entire summer on Route 53 in Redding is nearly complete. Route 53 in Redding has been closed for the project since mid-June at Umpawaug Road in both directions, causing a backroad detour. The state Department of Transportation says the detour is expected to end on Aug. 23.  The project includes replacing the abutments, deck and parapets along with minor safety improvements at the bridge. The project has cost $2.7 million and is scheduled to be completed in September.
