Armonk's Louis Calder Center Is Tick Central For Research Armonk's Louis Calder Center Is Tick Central For Research
Armonk's Louis Calder Center Is Tick Central For Research ARMONK, N.Y. -- Many folks keep track of the pollen count once allergy season starts, but how many know the tick index? Fordham's Louis Calder Center, based in Armonk, hopes to change all that. The biological field station and research center -- 113 forested acres with labs devoted to the study of ticks --  lists the index for the week every Friday. "Our goal is to let folks know, hey, maybe today is a good idea for a movie rather than hiking outside," said Director and Vector Ecologist Thomas Daniels, Ph.D. According to Dr. Daniels, the Armonk facility, which is part of the Fordham …
X-Planations: Yonkers Chef Peter X. Kelly On Spring X-Planations: Yonkers Chef Peter X. Kelly On Spring
X-Planations: Yonkers Chef Peter X. Kelly On Spring YONKERS, N.Y. -- Spring gets my juices flowing and has me thinking of cooking in a lighter manner. After the cold winter and its braises, stews and root vegetables, I like to think about the green of asparagus, the sweetness of just picked peas, the crispness of the first soft shell crabs and the pink of a just roasted leg of lamb.  Springtime brings a whole new set of ingredients for us to play with in the kitchens of my restaurants. Shaving asparagus for a salad with burrata, for example, or playing with a crisp tempura of spring onions with dashi, or preparing sashimi of king salmon …

Mamaroneck Resident Mixes Fashion With Family In Creating Her Boutique MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- It's a good thing Kristen Catullo's last name was so hard to pronounce. Otherwise, Mamaroneck might not have Katules, her new (ish) store on E. Boston Post Road. Katules was the lifelong Mamaroneck resident's nickname in college. And so, it was only natural when it came to opening her own boutique, she turned to the moniker where the seed for her dream was first created. Now known as Kristen Carelli (she's married with a 10-month-old daughter), she's been in the fashion industry for close to 10 years with a background that spans working in the personal shopping depar…

Edgemont Resident Graduates With A Degree In 'Life Lessons' SCARSDALE, N.Y. -- For Edgemont resident Ayesha Khan, college graduation on May 19 couldn't be sweeter. That's because the 22-year-old wasn't sure she'd make it to this day. Despite her youth and lack of family history, Khan was diagnosed with breast cancer last January, four months before she was supposed to graduate. She said she felt a lump randomly one day while changing. "It was as if it just appeared," she said. "I had never noticed it before. Cancer didn't even seem like a possibility at the time, but just to be safe I went to a few doctors that ran a bunch of tests. No one thoug…

Stamford Chef Aarón Sánchez who recently opened Paloma in the new Harbor Point development, and the restaurant's Director of Beverage Olie Berlic, offer the following tips for those celebrating Cinco de Mayo at home. Start by reading a recipe. For some reason, many of us follow a recipe when we’re cooking a meal but start throwing around proportions like we’re Tom Cruise in "Cocktail" when we’re playing bartender at our own party. This is a recipe for drink disaster, said Berlic. Use quality tequila. The star of your drink should…
