Putnam Genetics Counselor Discusses New Saliva Test For Breast Cancer PUTNAM COUNTY, N.Y. -- Could an inexpensive test using saliva screen for genetic cancer risks, specifically the two main breast cancer risk genes, known as BRCA1 and BRCA2? A recent New York Times article outlines the mission of Color Genomics, a Silicon Valley startup, to offer just that (go here to read). Locally, Kelli Mayfarth, M.S, C.G.S., a genetics counselor for Health Quest who sees patients at Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel, said the genetics community, while excited for this kind of development, has a host of concerns before it hits the market. "Clearly, this could be a h…

White Plains, Do You Drink Blue Moon? Poll Says It's New York's Favorite WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Wherefore art thou Captain Lawrence? Or Yonkers Brewery? Or Broken Bow? According to a poll by Blowfish For Hangovers (go here to view), Blue Moon is the top-selling beer in New York. Other stats from the survey: Maine claims the most drinkers per state, with Wyoming and Alaska not far behind.  The ones that complain about their hangovers the most, however, are folks in Washington, D.C., Wisconsin and Utah. And, to file under, you're not alone: Fifty percent of respondents admit to being hungover at work, 25 percent have been late to work due to a hango…

Shakespeare Meets Taylor Swift In New Rochelle 'Pop-Up' Performance Shakespeare Meets Taylor Swift In New Rochelle 'Pop-Up' Performance
Shakespeare Meets Taylor Swift In New Rochelle 'Pop-Up' Performance NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Eight students from New Rochelle High School turned the patio of the Wykagyl Starbucks into a stage Thursday afternoon in a "pop-up" performance as part of the City's "Art Ecounters." An audience of about 20 stood in the unseasonably chilly temperatures to watch the group -- all members of the Senior Acting Company -- do five Shakespeare sonnets in honor of the Bard's birthday (he was born April 23, 1564 and actually died on the same date in 1616). "We wanted to bring Shakespeare up to date," said Colin Taylor, and so the theme for their fifteen-minute show was "Sh…

Westport Mom And Son Enjoy Take Your Child To Work Day In Stamford STAMFORD, Conn. -- Sixth-grader Alex Stickley, a Westport resident, spent his morning at Deloitte's office in Stamford learning about IT, consulting, accounting, taking inventory and "greening" the environment as part of Take Our Daughters And Sons to Work Day.  According to his mom, Clare Powell Stickley, he also learned that accountants must review all the rules annually -- and it is a thick book! The Day is always celebrated on the fourth Thursday in April. This year, the theme is #MPOWR which stands for "Knowledge + Choice = Strength."

X-Planations: Chef Peter X. Kelly Dishes On Favorite Restaurants YONKERS, N.Y. -- I’m often asked, “Where do you eat when you’re not at one of your restaurants?" Since this happens far too infrequently than either my wife or I would like, we try to choose carefully. But, like everyone else, we have our favorites. We also like to try out whatever is new or interesting. More often than not, we are drawn to area restaurants where I know the chef and respect their work and attitude. Some of my local favorites are The Cookery in Dobbs Ferry where Dave Dibari’s playful take on Italian cooking is always fun and surprising. I'm also a fan of the Fortina r…

Mamaroneck Resident's Story Is Featured In Film, '112 Weddings' MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Sue Odierna of Mamaroneck never thought when she got married 22 years ago that she'd be approached by her wedding videographer to be part of a documentary.  But now her story, along with the stories of ten other couples, including a husband and wife from New Rochelle and a rabbi from White Plains are featured in "112 Weddings," a documentary which follows couples in the Greater New York area from their wedding day to the present.
