According to author Mary Witkowski, Bridgeport city historian for the Bridgeport History Center, King delivered the Frank Jacoby lecture for the University of Bridgeport in March 1961 at the Klein Memorial Auditorium. More than 2,700 local residents attended the event. King returned to the city later that year -- in June --  to receive an honorary doctorate in law from the University of Bridgeport.
