Standard Amusements, County Trade Barbs Over Canceled $25 Million Playland Contract The battle over management of Playland Amusement Park has gotten nastier, making a costly, lengthy legal battle more likely. Playland is owned by Westchester County -- which in 2015 announced a $25 million deal with Standard Amusements L.L.C. to manage the amusement park. News about the original 15-year deal was reported here by Daily Voice with more detail about Standard Amusement's co-founder, Nicholas Singer, a native of Harrison, reported here. The contract was negotiated and signed in May 2016 by then-County Executive Rob Astorino's administration. Astorino, a…
Cuomo Offers His Donors To Biden Presidential Bid Cuomo Offers His Donors To Biden Presidential Bid
Cuomo Offers His Donors To Biden Presidential Bid Like father, like son? Just as his dad, former New York Gov. Mario M. Cuomo, opened the door for Bill Clinton to run for president in 1991, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has opened his campaign coffers to help Joe Biden become a Democratic frontrunner in the 2020 race for the White House. During an impromptu news conference 28 years ago, as the snow fell in Syracuse, the elder Cuomo announced he would not run for president. That instantly cleared the field for then-Arkansas Gov. Clinton. The current governor, Cuomo of New Castle, told political party donors that he wants to open his formidable fundrai…

Here's Why Taking On Trump Is Sound Strategy Attorney General William Tong has put the environment at the top of his agenda as Connecticut's chief law enforcement officer.  It's a popular stance given that a solid majority of Americans believe in global warming, according to recent public-opinion polls and this five-year survey co-sponsored by the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication.  Rising public concern -- in sharp contrast to President Trump's position -- coupled with an increasing trend to combat pollution, has fueled Tong and other Attorneys General efforts to preserve decades-old Clean Air and Clean Water sta…

Move To Allow Option For 'Poll Free' Schools Gains Steam Does voting at public schools pose an increased security threat? Two local lawmakers do not want to take any risks.  State Assemblywoman Sandy Galef of Ossining and state Sen. David Carlucci, who represents parts of Westchester and Rockland counties, held a news conference on April 30 promoting their joint polling-free schools legislation (Assembly Bill 4743 and Senate Bill 5287). Their legislation would give school districts the authority to decline the designation of their buildings as polling locations by allowing school budget and election votes, at lo…

Politics Around The Towns: Stamford Citizen Of Year, Bridgeport Election, Danbury Budget Passes Former Gov. Dannel P. Malloy isn't history -- yet. The Democrat was honored as Stamford Citizen of the Year last week at the Crowne Plaza Stamford Hotel. Malloy became the 76th person to be named Citizen of the Year (COTY). The former governor of Connecticut and longtime mayor of Stamford was born in the city. Malloy said he has attended many COTY dinners, but this marked the first one honoring him. Dudley Williams, a Board of Finance member and city volunteer who won the 2018 COTY award, said Malloy led an economic comeback for Stamford during his tenure as mayor. Malloy wa…

These Westchester Towns Annually Rack Up Millions In Traffic, Parking Violations Westchester's smallest municipal courts aren't so small -- when it comes to collecting money. In fact, the county's 35 town and village courts average nearly $1 million in annual fines and fees for traffic violations and parking tickets. And three of the Westchester municipalities rank among the state's top 10  "high-enforcement" regions of New York. Harrison, Port Chester and Greenburgh rank among the top 10 municipalities statewide in annual fines collected from tickets, according to the state Comptroller's Office.  This ranking did not include court revenue totals for the citi…

Local Drivers No Longer Spared Tolls Aimed At Out-Of-State Trucks? Keep Your Eye On Legislators Gov. Ned Lamont's Republican challenger last fall, Bob Stefanowski, warned, "Give an inch, take a mile." Stefanowski predicted that Democrat Lamont of Greenwich, who once favored tolls for all drivers -- cars and trucks -- would revert back to that money-grabbing proposition once he got initial support for out-of-state trucks only. Earlier this year, Lamont and a coalition of business leaders, labor officials and state lawmakers called for the restoration of highway tolls to finance upgrades to the Connecticut’s crumbling transportation system -- which is expected to run a deficit in 2023 w…

Governor Expands Economic Development Team To Attract, Retain Businesses This story has been updated. Gov. Ned Lamont has attracted some international heavy-hitters to his Economic Development team including former top executives from PepsiCo and IBM. That's good news for a state that has not recovered from the worst recession since the Great Depression. This month, Lamont added two more board members, Donald Kendall, Jr., co-founder and chair of Social Venture Partners Connecticut, and R. Adam Norwitt, president and CEO of Amphenol Corp., to the Connecticut Economic Resource Center, Inc., a nonprofit that promotes business growth. “There is nobody better to s…
State Dems Divided Over Higher Capital Gains Taxes, Or Expanded Sales Taxes State Dems Divided Over Higher Capital Gains Taxes, Or Expanded Sales Taxes
State Dems Divided Over Higher Capital Gains Taxes, Or Expanded Sales Taxes Democrats at the state Capitol are divided over how to balance the proposed two-year budget before a June deadline. Elected leaders in the Connecticut House and Senate want to close the state’s budget deficit by increasing the rate on capital gains taxes, taxes levied on stocks, bonds, and real estate. Speaker of the House Joe Aresimowicz said House Democrats are not enamored with the governor’s budget that would enforce the sales tax on hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of goods and services. Meanwhile, state Sen. John Fonfara, a Democrat from Hartford, proposes increasing the statew…
