An (almost) lifelong Westchester resident, Sam has reported on all facets of Westchester since he graduated from Ryerson University with a degree in print journalism, including stints at North County News and The Examiner. Somers Senior Named Siemens Semifinalist Alyssa Klee's science research has gained national recognition. Klee was named a Siemens semifinalist for her work on trying to reduce side effects for patients on immunotherapies. The identification of the unknown binding site between two proteins, PD-L1 and B7-1, would benefit the countless weaker patients who cannot handle these side effects, Klee said. Macy's Employee Fraudulently Returned Merchandise, Yorktown Police Say A 20-year-old Northern Westchester resident was arrested and charged for processing fake returns when she worked at Macy's in Jefferson Valley Friday. Cyan Rampersant of Peekskill was charged with petit larceny, a Class A misdemeanor. While working at Macy's, Rampersant allegedly took merchandise in the store and returned the merchandise to her register numerous times for a total value of $460.14, police said. Rampersant then took the value of the merchandise and placed it on two Easy Exchange gift cards, police said. She was released on $100 bail and is due back in court on Jan. 23.

Golden Corral Closure Tops Dutchess News For 2017 DUTCHESS COUNTY, N.Y. -- Golden Corral did not have a good 2017 in Poughkeepsie. The long-delayed buffet finally opened on Route 9 in the Town of Poughkeepsie Jan. 15 after having issues with the gas line. Just as quickly as it opened, it closed briefly in February for undisclosed reasons. The Grand Helps Poughkeepsie Spread Holiday Cheer POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Grand Rehabilitation, and the Poughkeepsie Fire and Police Departments wanted to make sure everyone had a Merry Christmas. The groups teamed up last weekend to distribute food and gifts to families in need throughout the city. The Grand at River Valley served as a drop-off site with many items donated by visitors and family members of residents at the facility. Additionally, staff purchased more than $400 worth of toys from Mart to add to the boxes. Volunteers also delivered flowers and turkeys provided by participating local businesses.

Yorktown Man Involved In Three-Car Crash Drove Drunk, Police Say A three-car accident on Underhill Avenue and Rochambeau Drive in Yorktown resulted in a 52-year-old man being charged with felony DWI Friday. Roy Byremo of Yorktown was charged with a felony DWI and felony aggravated DWI because he had a previous DWI conviction in the last 10 years, Yorktown Police said. He was also charged with driving with a suspended registration, a misdemeanor. After investigating the accident, Byremo was arrested at the scene and transported back to police headquarters.

Walkway Over The Hudson Awarded $500,000 for Visitors Center POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- the Walkway Over The Hudson is getting a new visitors center. The Walkway was awarded a $500,000 grant through New York State’s Consolidated Funding Application (CFA) program this week, to be allocated toward the planned Eastern Entrance Welcome Center. The welcome center is expected to be completed by spring 2019 and will feature permanent restrooms, a gathering area for up to 40 visitors, water fountains, benches, lighting, landscaping and other amenities. Rockland Allowing Residents To Prepay 2018 Property Taxes ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- Rockland County residents will be able to pay their 2018 tax bills early. Rockland County Legislators voted 13-0 Wednesday to approve the tax warrants necessary for Clarkstown, Haverstraw, Orangetown, Ramapo and Stony Point to accept early payments of some 2018 taxes. Helen 'Candy Grandma' Conklin, 79, Peekskill Business Owner Westchester business owner Helen E. Conklin aka “Candy Grandma,” died Sunday at the Eleanor in Hyde Park at the age of 79. Conklin was born in Peekskill in 1938 to Gladys and Fred Conklin, who predeceased her, along with her brothers Jimmy and Elmer and sisters Marie and Charlotte. Conklin was the proprietor of two small businesses, a candy store and a variety store in Peekskill in the 1970s. Costco Eyes Patterson Crossing Site PATTERSON, N.Y. -- Costco is looking to come to Patterson. The big box store is hoping to open at the Patterson Crossing Retail Center, located at Route 311 and I-84, even though the project has been tied up in legal action.
