Deadline Nears To Recertify Handgun Licenses Handgun owners have a little over a month before they have to recertify their handguns. Holders of handgun licenses issued prior to Jan. 15, 2013 must recertify their licenses with the New York State Police by Jan. 31. Covered licensees who fail to recertify by that date could be subject to having their licenses suspended or revoked without further notice, according to the Putnam County Sherrif's Office. Spackenkill Student Scores Big In Siemens Competition A student from Poughkeepsie and a student from Ardsley were selected as national finalists in the Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology. Rachel Li of Spackenkill High School and Jainil Sutaria of Ardsley High School along with another student from Colorado won a team division runner-up prize and will split a $50,000 scholarship.  Their project developed a novel gel compound that could help bone regeneration in teeth by acting as a barrier to bacteria.

Chipotle Opening New White Plains Location Chipotle Mexican Grill is opening a new Westchester location.The eatery, famous for its burritos and bowls, will launch its second restaurant in White Plains on Thursday, Dec. 7. The new restaurant is in front of the Crossroads Shopping Center at 405 Tarrytown Road. Chipotle's other White Plains location is at 250 Main Street in White Plains. The restaurant will be open from 10:45 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week. In Westchester, Chipotle has locations in Rye Brook, Yonkers, and Pelham.

The Kentucky Fried Chicken at 189 South Highland Ave. in Ossining has closed, leaving the fast-food chain with just one store in Northern Westchester - at the Beach Shopping Center in Peekskill. (Its Yorktown location had previously closed.) Inside the Ossining restaurant, the lights are off and the chairs are stacked up with a sign that says CLOSED on the front door. Lawmaker Criticizes State's Mute Swan Plan A Queens senator wants to protect New York's swans. Sen. Tony Avella (D-Queens) has been critical of the state's Department of Environmental Conservation plans to control the mute swan population. In 2016, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed into a law a bill imposing a two-year moratorium of the plan. In September, the DEC released another Mute Swan Management Plan, which Avella harshly criticized.
