Car Lands In Brook After Accident In Mahopac Falls MAHOPAC FALLS, N.Y. -- A driver and his vehicle were pulled from a brook in Mahopac early Wednesday, officials said. The Mahopac Falls Volunteer Fire Department and Emergency Medical Service were sent to help Carmel police after the 7 a.m. accident at Route 6N and Hill Street, officials aid. When rescue crews arrived, the driver was out of the vehicle but was injured, officials said. A passing motorist called 911 and helped the driver until rescuers arrived, officials said. TransCare medics responded and had a Mahopac Falls ambulance transport the patient for further care, officials said. …

The ramp will not be affected Thursday or Friday. During the closure Wednesday, use Roaring Brook Road as an alternate.

Before retiring, Rutkoski was a legal secretary for attorney Cyril T. McDermott in Peekskill and Cortlandt. She was born April 25, 1918, in Verplanck to John J. and Caroline McGuire Rothweiler. She graduated from Peekskill High School in 1937 and attended Gaines Business School in New York City. On Oct. 5, 1947, she married Thomas J. Rutkoski at Assumption Church. Dorothy Turchinsky, 78, Retired Teacher, Yonkers Resident YONKERS, N.Y. -- Dorothy Anne Turchinsky (nee Bradley), of Yonkers, died Monday, Aug. 24, at age 78. Turchinsky was born Jan. 8, 1937, to Stephen and Arlene (O'Hagan) Bradley in Astoria, Queens, where she was raised and graduated from Long Island City High School. She received her B.S. in education from Fordham University and her master's degree in education from SUNY Plattsburg. She was an elementary school teacher for the Yonkers Board of Education for over 30 years, retiring in 1996. On Feb. 6, 1960, she married Adrew Turchinsky in Most Precious Blood Church. He died in 1986. …

Rotary Club Serving Somers, Katonah Helps Eradicate Polio SOMERS, N.Y. -- The Northeast Westchester Rotary Club, which meets in Somers, cheered the announcement earlier in August that Africa has been polio-free for an entire year. The report was issued by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, of which Rotary International is a partner. When the global polio eradication drive began in 1988, more than 350,000 children around the world were paralyzed by the virus each year. Last year, only 34 new cases were found.
