An (almost) lifelong Westchester resident, Sam has reported on all facets of Westchester since he graduated from Ryerson University with a degree in print journalism, including stints at North County News and The Examiner. A film columnist for WAG Magazine, Sam's moviegoing expertise has been profiled in the New York Times and he was a featured guest on VH1's Big Morning Buzz Live.

Yorktown Three-Sport Standout Brett Makar Named Con Edison Athlete Of Week YORKTOWN, N.Y.-- Brett Makar, a senior at Yorktown High School, is getting it done both on and off the field. The football player was named Con Edison Athlete of the Week. He has 46 carries for 520 yards and seven touchdowns. Against Hendrick Hudson, he ran for 215 yards and two touchdowns. As a linebacker, Makar has eight tackles and a sack. Makar also runs track and plays lacrosse. He has committed to play for the defending national champion University of Maryland men's lacrosse team. O'Dell, a former longtime resident of Briarcliff Manor, died Saturday, Sept. 30, in New Jersey at the age of 90. O'Dell was described as a beloved mother, grandmother and well-known real estate broker. West Haverstraw Flood Prevention Project Completed ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- In the future, Rockland County is hoping to avoid what happened during Hurricane Irene. The county announced Thursday the completion of a flood prevention project along the Minisceongo Creek in West Haverstraw.  County Executive Ed Day said the county will be reimbursed by FEMA for the $963,214 spent on the project. Man Caught With Suboxone In Yorktown Parking Lot, Police Say A Putnam man was arrested and charged Wednesday afternoon after police received a report of possible drug use in a Commerce Street parking lot in Yorktown Heights. Brian DeSantis, 33, of Putnam Valley was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, a Class A misdemeanor after police say he possessed Suboxone at 1921 Commerce Street. DeSantis was remanded to the Westchester County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail. He is due back in court on Oct. 5 at 6 p.m.

Last week, two boxes filled with school supplies were shipped to Clear Creek High School in Houston, which was impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Shum's novel "Queen of Spades" will be released on Oct. 10 by Forest Avenue Press. The book is set in a casino and is about a recovering gambler, a pit boss who has six months to live and a dealer obsessed with the playing style of a mysterious elderly customer.
