Date Set For Atlantic City Aquarium's Reopening: Mayor
The Atlantic City Aquarium will welcome visitors back this summer after being closed for almost four years, the city's mayor announced. Mayor Marty Small Sr. said the aquarium on North New Hampshire Avenue will reopen on Monday, July 1. A Cape May County man was arrested after he was found with child pornography, authorities said. Charles Chapman, 31, of Woodbine, is charged with third-degree possession of child pornography, Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey Sutherland announced on Friday, Feb. 2. Heroin Kingpin Who Ran Fatal Drug Ring From Atlantic County Jail Eligible For Parole In 9 Years
A man who ran a heroin-selling network from the Atlantic County Jail was sentenced, authorities said. Emery Chapman, 44, of Pleasantville, was sentenced to 21 years in state prison, the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office announced on Friday, Feb. 2. Chapman will be eligible for parole after nine years and once he's released, he'll have five years of "intensive parole supervision" under the No Early Release Act. A wanted man from New York City was accused of stealing a woman's purse in Atlantic City and police thanked two bystanders for helping catch him, authorities said. Atlantic City police said 27-year-old Jose Hernandez from The Bronx, NY, was arrested on Thursday, Feb. 1. Investigators said Hernandez walked up to the woman and tried to sell her a cigarette. Police in one Atlantic County city are investigating after a man was hospitalized in a late-night shooting, authorities said. Egg Harbor City police responded to 911 calls about shots fired near Havana Avenue and Arago Street at around 11:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 31, the department said. Authorities have identified the pedestrian who was killed by a minivan in Ocean Township earlier this week. Yefim Rotsenmar, 68, of Ocean Township died in the crash on West Park Avenue on Tuesday, Jan. 30, a spokesperson for the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office said. A plan to protect beaches in one Cape May County city has been blocked by the state, officials said. The state Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) sent a letter to the City of North Wildwood denying an emergency request to build a beachfront bulkhead, the city announced on Thursday, Feb. 1. A raccoon was found with rabies in Atlantic County in the first confirmed case of the year, according to officials. The county's health department said the raccoon tested positive for the virus on Wednesday, Jan. 31 after the animal was found on the 100 block of Asbury Avenue in Egg Harbor Township.
