New Law Requires NJ Drivers To Move Over For Disabled Vehicles Gov. Phil Murphy has expanded New Jersey's "move over" law to protect drivers of broken-down vehicles on the side of Garden State roads. The new requirement says drivers must safely move into another lane when approaching a disabled vehicle using flashing hazard lights, road flares, or reflective triangles. Gov. Murphy signed the bill into law on Tuesday, Jan. 16. If oncoming drivers can't safely move into another lane, they must slow down below the speed limit and be prepared to stop. Pedestrian Struck By Vehicle, Killed In South Jersey A pedestrian was hit and killed while crossing Route 40 in Atlantic County, authorities said. State troopers responded to a crash at 1113 Harding Highway in Buena just before 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 17, the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office announced. Investigators said a black 2017 Hyundai was driving east on Route 40 before hitting a pedestrian who was crossing the road. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the crash scene. Madison Alfano of Staten Island, NY, lost control of her car and hit the driver's side of another vehicle on the northbound side of the Garden State Parkway in Sayreville around 7:50 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, New Jersey State Police  Trooper Troy McNair said.
