35 Years Later, Morris County Homicide Of Decorated WWI Veteran Lester Mickens Still Unsolved It’s been 35 years since a decorated WWI veteran was found dead inside his Morris County home, and authorities continue to seek answers in hopes of making an arrest. Lester Mickens, 89, was last seen alive by a neighbor sitting on the front porch of his home at 1671 Rt. 23 in Kinnelon around 3 p.m. on Sept. 17, 1986, the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office said. Mickens’ body was found inside his home the following day around 9 a.m., authorities said. Mickens lived alone and was a decorated WWI veteran. The case was ruled a homicide and remains unsolved. Hunterdon County Man Burglarizes Jewelry Store, Struggles With Arresting Officers, Police Say A Hunterdon County man who had just burglarized a local jewelry store and escaped through a broken window struggled with officers attempting to arrest him earlier this week, authorities said. Daniel Malinowski, 30, is accused of breaking into Saunders Jeweler’s in Flemington before escaping through a broken window around 12:35 a.m. Monday, borough police said. Shooting At Trenton Home Leaves 37-Year-Old Man Dead, Prosecutor Says A 37-year-old man was fatally shot in Trenton before dawn Friday, authorities said. Jeff Charles of Trenton was found with gunshot wounds as officers responded to the shooting report at a home on Race Street around 12:55 a.m., Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo J. Onofri said. Charles was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation is ongoing. Morris County Man, 58, Seriously Injured In Rt. 80 Crash With Tractor-Trailer [Update] A Morris County man was hospitalized with serious injuries after crashing into the back of a disabled tractor-trailer on Route 80, state police confirmed. Michael D. Central Jersey Man Swallows Heroin, Busted With 49 Folds, Police Say A Central Jersey man accused of selling heroin swallowed narcotics in an attempt to hide them from police in Flemington, authorities said. Jesse Chambers, 44, was approached in a vehicle near Park Avenue in front of Steve’s Food Store in Flemington on Sept. 9, borough police said in a release. Morris County Man Who Left 2 Dogs In Hot Car On 90-Degree Day Charged With Animal Cruelty A Morris County man who police say left two dogs in a hot car on a 90-degree day was charged with animal cruelty. Officers responded to the Chester Springs Mall parking lot, where the dogs were found locked in a car on August 14, Chester Police said. A follow-up investigation identified the owner as a man from Mendham, police said. His name was not released. The man was charged with animal cruelty and is scheduled to appear in court.

NJ Gunman Indicted On Charges From Double Shooting A Mercer County man has been indicted on attempted murder charges stemming from a New Brunswick shooting last year, authorities said. Kyale Simonson, 33, was indicted Wednesday by a Middlesex County Grand Jury with charges for first-degree attempted murder, second-degree aggravated assault and second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone said.
