Falling asleep at the wheel has been shown to have sometimes fatal consequences. In Putnam County, in 2007, a 25-year-old Garrison paramedic was killed when the ambulance he was riding in ran off Route 9 and struck a tree. The fund, which was started in 1915, helps about 370 families each year. The fund is soliciting donations and food to go into a food basket. CORTLANDT, N.Y. -- The Mohegan Lake Fire Department has contained an active fire that started in a trash compactor at Kohl's Department Store at 3008 East Main St. in Cortlandt Friday. Lt. Tom Eade of the Mohegan Lake Fire Department said the fire department received the call at 9:51 a.m. and that all apparatuses were at the scene.
