Beacon Sloop Club Celebrates Pumpkin Festival BEACON, N.Y. -- The Beacon Sloop Club will hold its annual pumpkin festival Sunday from noon-5 p.m. at Pete and Toshi Seeger Park. Beginning at noon volunteers will serve traditional Sloop Club chili, stone soup and other treats. New Yorkers Say Common Core Standards Worsen, Poll Finds New York voters responding to a Siena College poll think Common Core test standards have gotten worse, according to a blog report in lodhud.com. Statewide, 40 percent of voters say the standards have harmed schools, while 21 percent think otherwise, lohud reported. Lakeland Copper Beech Students Collect 51 Blood Donations YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. -- Lakeland Copper Beech Middle School held another successful blood drive last week as students collected 51 donations. This included 10 donations of double red cells.  Student volunteers under the direction of sixth-grade teacher Michelle Reuter helped organize the drive, serving as assistants to those donating as well as providing music to entertain everyone.  The school will host another blood drive on Wednesday, Jan. 27.
