Obama Signs Bill To Rename Waldwick Post Office For Local Marine
WALDWICK, N.J. -- President Barack Obama signed a bill to rename the Waldwick Post Office after a local marine who was killed two weeks shy of coming back for his sister's wedding, according to NorthJersey.com.Staff Sgt. Joseph D’Augustine was 29 when he was killed March 27. He had served twice in Iraq and was serving his second tour in Afghanistan at the time he was killed, NorthJersey.com reported. Peekskill: 5K Has Room For More Runners
PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- It's not too late to register for the 5K in Peekskill Saturday, Oct. 10. Over 150 runners are registered and there's room for more. Visit www.peekskillcsd.org to print out a registration form and bring it by the PCSD Administration Building,1031 Elm St. in Peekskill. Gunman Holds Up Patterson Mini-Mart
PATTERSON, N.Y. -- A gunman acting alone held up a Mini-Mart on Front Street across from the train station in Patterson Wednesday Night, Putnam County Courier has reported.Commuters exiting a train watched the scene unfold as armed police cordoned off the area after the incidpent that occurred at 8:45 p.m., according to the report. Motorists Should Expect Weeks Of Delays On Route 208 In Hawthorne
HAWTHORNE, N.J. – The New Jersey Department of Transportation will be conducting pavement preservation and micro-surfacing on state Route 208 (including on/off ramps) in the Borough of Hawthorne the next few weeks. The majority of the work will be conducted overnight between the hours of 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Posted detours may be present. Drivers should plan alternate routes if necessary. Bethel Police Promotes First Woman Sergeant In Department History
BETHEL, Conn. -- Bethel Police Officer Heather Burnes has become the department's first female sergeant, The News-Times reported.Previously, Burnes served as a school resource officer at Bethel Middle School, the first woman to do so, the article says. Weather Cooperating With Walk To School Initiative In Harrison
HARRISON, N.Y. -- It's the middle of Walk to School Week, an Oct. 5-9 initiative that asks parents to leave cars hone and walk with their kids to and from school. Walk to School Day was Monday, launching a week of activities at area schools, including Parsons Elementary School in Harrison. The school principal remarked on the "beautiful weather" as he retweeted information on the YMCA's website about the initiative Supporters locally include parent volunteers, United Way of Westchester and Putnam and the PepsiCo Foundation, according to the YMCA.
