'Alarming' Surge In Homicides Prompts Atlantic City Police Union's Request For More Officers
After four homicides in Atlantic City in the first week of 2024, the city's police union is calling for more officers to handle the "recent surge" in violence. Atlantic City Police Benevolent Association Local 24 posted a statement about the wave of killings on its Facebook page on Monday, Jan. 8. Police Identify Pedestrian Struck, Killed By Car In Lakewood
Police have identified the pedestrian who was hit and killed by a car in Ocean County on Monday, Jan. 8. Lakewood police said Ana Gabriella Mayorga-Baires, 28, was killed in the crash. Officers responded to the wreck at the intersection of New Hampshire Avenue and Erica Road just after 5:30 p.m. When police arrived, a 67-year-old man told officers he was driving south on New Hampshire Avenue when he hit someone with his SUV. 'Execution-Style' Jersey Shore Killers Sentenced
Two men were sentenced to prison time for their roles in what prosecutors called an "execution-style" double murder of a young man and woman in Neptune Township nearly two years ago. Gabriel Braithwaite, 21, of Keansburg was sentenced to 40 years in state prison on Friday, Jan. 5, Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond Santiago announced. Braithewaite pleaded guilty in July 2023 to three charges, including two counts of first-degree murder. Jeron Dearin, 24, of Aberdeen was sentenced to five years in state prison. Lottery Ticket Worth $15K Sold In Ocean County
A winning lottery ticket worth more than $15,000 was sold in Manchester Township on Monday, Jan. 8. The New Jersey Lottery said the $5 Perfectly Pear'd ticket is worth $15,427, which is half of a progressive jackpot. The ticket was purchased at the Country Farm convenience store on County Route 530 in the Whiting section of the township. The NJ Lottery also said Fast Play Progressive tickets are sold at every location and allow players to quickly see if their ticket is a lucky winner.

Police Searching For Suspect in Atlantic County Shooting
Police in Hamilton Township are looking for whoever shot a man late at night on Sunday, Jan. 7. Township police responded to a report of shots fired in the Pineland Gardens housing development on Route 40 in Mays Landing at around 11:30 p.m. When officers arrived, they found a 22-year-old man with two gunshot wounds. He was rushed to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Division, for treatment. The victim says the shots were fired from a black sedan of an unknown make and model. Michael Brantley, who was a former mayor of Neptune Township, has died. An obituary posting said Brantley died on Saturday, Jan. 6. He was 79 years old. Middlesex County Man Killed While Walking Across Route 1 Overnight
A Dunellen man was killed while walking across Route 1 in Edison early in the morning on Monday, Jan. 8, authorities said. Adam Ginsberg, 52, was crossing Route 1 against a green light at the intersection with Plainfield Avenue at around 2:20 a.m., according to Edison police. Ginsberg was hit by a car driving north on Route 1. He was rushed to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The driver stayed at the scene of the crash and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation. No charges have been filed.

An Upper Township man was killed in a late night double shooting in Atlantic City on Sunday, Jan. 7, authorities said. City police responded to a ShotSpotter alert on the 1100 block of Monroe Avenue just after 10 p.m., according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office. Ventnor City is trying to crack down on thieves taking advantage of a social media trend by helping the car owners who could be targeted. The city's police department said it will give away free steering wheel locks to owners of certain Kia and Hyundai vehicles. The affected Kia vehicles are between the model years 2011 and 2021.
