An (almost) lifelong Westchester resident, Sam has reported on all facets of Westchester since he graduated from Ryerson University with a degree in print journalism, including stints at North County News and The Examiner. A film columnist for WAG Magazine, Sam's moviegoing expertise has been profiled in the New York Times and he was a featured guest on VH1's Big Morning Buzz Live.

Proposed Rockland Budget Includes Funds To Build New Hi-Tor Facility ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- The 2018 Rockland County Budget has been unveiled. The budget features a 1.95 percent tax increase, which is below the state-mandated tax cap on the tax levy. The budget keeps spending essentially flat and has no layoffs. Day's budget calls for $1.2 million in capital funds to build a new animal shelter on the county-owned land where Hi-Tor is currently located. The county will take the lead in building this new shelter and is counting on the five towns and the Village of Spring Valley to pay their share of the operating costs. Westchester Publisher Files For Bankruptcy Home Town Media Group, which publishes five newspapers in Southern Westchester, filed for Chapter 11 last month.The company has $178,689 in assets and $382,935 in liabilities according to the Westchester Business Journal. The landlord of its White Plains office said the company is filing bankruptcy in order to reverse an eviction order, according to the Business Journal. The company was evicted on Sept. 25 and is seeking to get back into its office to reorganize, according to the Business Journal. Therapy Dog Starts New Job At Hendrick Hudson High School MONTROSE, N.Y. -- Hendrick Hudson has a new employee- though this one has four legs. Ramona, a labrador retriever, is a therapy dog who assists high school students who need help with functional behavior skills, social interactions, and language as part of the school's Social Academic Independent Living Occupation Recreation program. The dog visits the school several days a week. Occupants Atop Car After Taconic Crash In Yorktown The Yorktown Heights Fire Department had to make an early morning rescue on the Taconic State Parkway on Monday.A vehicle was lying on its side northbound on the Taconic with the occupants on top of the car, according to the Yorktown Heights Fire Department. Firefighters deployed its vehicle winch to provide initial stabilization and then deployed paratech rescue struts on the downhill side of the vehicle, according to the Yorktown Heights Fire Department. The occupants were then assisted off the vehicle with a ladder.

Rockland County Assisting Puerto Rico Following Hurricane Rockland County is coming to the rescue. County Executive Ed Day, the Rockland Legislature and community leaders announced plans Wednesday to deliver aid to the residents of Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Maria. Paving Project Starts On Taconic Parkway In Dutchess Part of the Taconic State Parkway is getting paved.Starting Sunday, the Department of Transportation will be paving a segment of the Taconic from Hortentown Road to I-84 in East Fishkill and Kent. The project will mill between 1inch and 1 1/2 inches of asphalt pavement and replace it with 1 to 2 inches of new hot mix asphalt pavement. This route serves as a major commuter connection between Dutchess County and New York Metropolitan Region and carries roughly 25500 vehicles per day. The work will occur from 9 p.m. to 6 p.m., northbound and southbound.

Traffic Alert Issued For Fishkill DUTCHESS COUNTY, N.Y. -- The New York State Department of Transportation is planning a longterm roadwork project at Route 376 at the Robinson Lane/Lake Walton Road intersection. The project will add turn lanes, new traffic lights, crosswalks and improve drainage and will run from Oct. 9 through August 2018.
