Laura Schaefer, a Briarcliff resident who grew up in Tarrytown, opened her new bookstore Scattered Books in Chappaqua in November. Faranda, 90, was killed on Sunday when he was hit by a car outside of his Washington Avenue home. He was taken to Westchester Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Another Peekskill Employee Suspended Following Building Department Break-In PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- A second employee has been suspended as the city continues to investigate a reported break-in at the building department. Gregory Matera, who heads the city's IT department was suspended without pay Tuesday, City Manager Richard Leins announced. Last week, facilities manager Joe Minnerly was suspended with pay a day after he reported the break-in to Mayor Frank Catalina. Tappan Hill School Evacuated After Gas Leak TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- The Tappan Hill School in Tarrytown, which is leased to BOCES, was evacuated after a backhoe ruptured a gas line outside the building, according to the Tarrytown School District.  No one was injured, according to the district. 90-Year-Old Man Struck, Killed By Car In Pleasantville PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. -- A 90-year-old man died on Sunday after being struck and killed by a car on Washington Avenue in Pleasantville. Hercules Faranda was hit just after 11 a.m., Lt. Jesse Wollman of the Pleasantville Police said. Faranda was taken to Westchester Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.  Wollman said a preliminary investigation has shown this was accident and the operator of the vehicle is being cooperative. Pleasantville Police working with Westchester County Police in their investigation of the accident. "It's very unfortunate," Wollman said.

Scenes From Saturday's Snowstorm The Hudson Valley got hammered Saturday, as people woke up to find themselves buried under a winter storm that lived up to expectations. Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a State of Emergency that includes New York City, Long Island, Westchester, Putnam, Rockland and Orange counties. All of Westchester, Putnam and Rockland are under a Winter Storm Warning. The warning, originally scheduled to take effect at 6 a.m. Saturday, has been pushed up to 4 a.m. It was originally scheduled to expire at 1 p.m. Sunday.
