Matthew M. Swetonic, 73, Of Somers SOMERS, N.Y. -- Matthew M. Swetonic, 73, most recently of Somers, died Monday, April 18. Swetonic was born in Brooklyn in October 1942 to the late Andrew Swetonic and Margaret Pollock Swetonic. He was raised in Pittsburgh and attended the University of Pittsburgh, a member of the graduating class of 1964. He went on to obtain a master's degree from the Columbia University School of Journalism.  In 1976, he married Ruth Maguire in New York City. They spent most of their married life in Chappaqua, where they raised their sons, Andrew and Nick. He had a long career in public relations, working …

Irvington Eighth-Graders Apply Math, Science Skills While Making Pizza IRVINGTON, N.Y. -- Eighth-graders at Irvington Middle School put on their chef hats for the day and made pizzas in Teresa Hunt’s home and careers class. The activity fostered their critical thinking and self-reliance skills and asked them to take control of their own learning. The students were given a recipe and tasked with following its directions and accurately measuring its ingredients in order to make a cheese or pepperoni pizza. Stavroula Kokkoris, 89, Of Yonkers YONKERS, N.Y. -- Stavroula Kokkoris, 89, a longtime resident of Yonkers died on April 19, 2016. Stavroula was born to Mihalis and Eleni Agriodimas of Apidia, Laconia, Greece. Stavroula came with her husband and children to the United States in 1968 following which she went to work for Super X Electronic Factory for 28 years. Upon her retirement Stavroula worked in her family's businesses; Koris Florist in Eastchester and Koris Nursery in Scarsdale. Mount Pleasant Food Drive Collects Nearly 2,400 Pounds Of Food THORNWOOD, N.Y. -- Mount Pleasant Central School District, in conjunction the statewide NYSUT food drive, collected and donated a ton of nonperishable food items to the Food Bank of Westchester this February. An actual ton, 2,398 pounds to be exact.Spearheaded by Westlake High School guidance leader Nick DiPaolo and fourth grade teacher Jessica Kelly, the drive was held in all four of the district’s schools for a few weeks in late January and early February. Rye Native Competes In World Junior Diving Championship GREENWICH, Conn. -- After a stellar showing at USA Diving Synchronized National Championships, Rye native Carolina Sculti is on her way to two major competitions, World Junior Diving Championships and Olympic Trials. Carolina was winner of one of the first five national titles awarded at the National Championships, held this year in San Antonio, Texas.
