Joseph Michael Sokota, 89, a native of Poughkeepsie and an award-winning camera operator for CBS Sports, died Saturday of complications from pneumonia.
Born in Poughkeepsie in 1927 to Jurie and Rose Sokota, Sokota was best known for being the first cameraman to do away with the tripod and take up a manned position at turn four of the Daytona 500, wearing a helmet to protect himself from flying debris and holding the camera on his shoulder.
He also covered football, basketball, and golf, but enjoyed working the news side as well, covering NASA launches at Cape Kennedy in the 1960s and as a …

$1M Winning Lottery Ticket Sold In Hopewell Junction
HOPEWELL JUNCTION, N.Y. -- No one hit the big $38 million jackpot during Tuesday night's New York Mega Millions, but one lucky person purchased a ticket worth $1 million in Hopewell Junction, according to New York Lottery officials.
The quick-pick ticket, purchased at Smokes 4 Less at 814 Route 82, had the five winning numbers of 8, 29, 30, 43, 64, but not the Mega Ball of 6. To win the giant jackpot, players have to match all six numbers, officials said.
The new millionaire now has a year to claim their prize, officials added.

Argiro was born on July 8, 1965, to Cosmo and Nancy (Sorbara) Argiro in Brooklyn.

Police: Hudson Valley Man Committed Violent, Criminal Sex Acts On Child
ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- A Tomkins Cove man was arrested Tuesday for performing violent, sexual acts on a child under the age of 7 the past month, according to the Stony Point Police.
Marc Melter, 25, was apprehended following an investigation of a report of a possible sexual assault that took place in a Tomkins Cove apartment. During the investigation, detectives were able to determine that Melter, a former New City resident, had attacked the child several times, said Lt. Daniel Hylas.
