Arsonist Torches Mahwah Condo: Prosecutor A Bergen County woman was arrested after officials say she started a fire in her bedroom at a condominium. Amel Mersali, 32, is facing an aggravated arson charge following an investigation into the fire at at 2102 Hawthorne Lane in Mahwah on Tuesday, April 4, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said. Following the fire, Mersali was transported to Bergen New Bridge Medical Center in Paramus for treatment and evaluation, Musella said.  She will appear in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack when she is released from the hospital, Musella said.

Plastic Utensils Could Be Banned In NJ If Assemblyman Gets His Way Single-use plastic utensils may be on the way out in New Jersey. A new bill proposed by Assemblyman Herb Conaway (D-Burlington) would ban food service businesses from providing single-use plastic utensils and condiments to customers, except upon request. The bill proposed last month also requires that restaurants provide reusable, washable utensils to customers eating on site.  Eateries that fail to do so would be fined $1,000 for the first offense, $2,500 for the second offense and $5,000 for the third and each subsequent offense.  Fines would go to the Clean Communities Progra…

Two $50K Powerball Winners Sold In North Jersey Two New Jersey Powerball players won big on Wednesday, April 5. The two second-tier prizewinning tickets matched four of the five white balls and the Power Ball, taking home the $50,000 prize.  The winning numbers for the drawing were: 03, 05, 09, 42, and 52. The Red Power Ball number was 11. The tickets were sold at Horizon House Deli in Fort Lee and Power Gas in East Orange.

The Hudson County town recently celebrated the grand opening of a newly-constructed parking deck at 51st Street, adding 500 new parking spaces.  The deck was financed through almost $12 million in municipal bonds and funding from the American Rescue Act. Tattooed Paterson Gunman Faces Attempted Murder Charge A 24-year-old man was arrested and charged for a shooting that occurred in Paterson last month. Rashane Lewis, of Paterson, was charged with first-degree attempted murder for shooting a 20-year-old man at 12th Avenue and William Street on Friday, March 10 around 9 p.m., Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes said. The victim's injuries were not fatal. Police apprehended Lewis on Tuesday, April 4, following an investigation, Valdes said. Lews was charged with attempted murder, various weapons offenses, and terroristic threats, and was issued a disorderly persons offense.

Implosion Of Nabisco Factory Postponed What's left of the shuttered Nabisco factory on Route 208 will remain standing a little while longer. The borough of Fair Lawn announced the implosion, set for Saturday, April 15, has been postponed. A new date and time has not been announced.  The borough did not give a reason for the postponement, though residents had expressed concern, including launching a petition, about the environmental impacts of the implosion.
