Nina Et Cetera Band Brings Jazz And Blues To Stratford Library
STRATFORD, Conn. -- The Stratford Library will present the Nina Et Cetera Band in a special concert entitled “Jazz and Blues: The Common Ground” on Friday, July 29 at 7 pm. The band played for Stratford audiences last year with their musical tribute to country music superstar Maybelle Carter. The jazz concert is free and open to the public. BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- The WorkPlace Scholarship program has been awarded by a $20,000 grant by the Pitney Bowes Foundation that will aid in job training for low-income individuals who require job skills training but can't access public training funds. WorkPlace Scholarships is a privately funded job training program that supplements public training funds. Lightning Strike Causes Fire At Monroe House
MONROE, Conn. — Monroe, Stepney and Stevenson firefighters responded to a home on Cutlers Farm Road Monday after a resident reported a lightning strike and that the basement was filling with smoke. Fire officials said crews found fire in the walls of the basement extending to the first floor. With the assistance of all three departments, the fire was extinguished and ventilation was performed. Ridgefield Firefighter Retires After More Than Three Decades
RIDGEFIELD, Conn. -- Lt. Pete Drake is the second firefighter in less than a week to retire after his 34 years of service to the Town of Ridgefield. His final shift will be Monday, July 26. Lt. Brian Jones retired earlier in the week, and the department wished both firefighters the best of luck.

Bridgeport Touts Big Decline In Homicides, Shootings In 2016
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Crime statistics through the first half of 2016 show major reductions in homicides and shootings in Bridgeport when compared with the same time period last year, according to police. So far in 2016, Bridgeport has seen four homicides, a 50 percent reduction from the homicide figure through the first six months of 2015. Specifically, only two homicides in Bridgeport thus far this year have resulted from gunfire, a 75 percent decline in the shooting homicide figure from the same time period in 2015.
